Benvenuto, mi chiamo Stefano Ricci e sono il creatore di ELMANCO, un blog che cerca la bellezza, l’innovazione e la buona progettazione nell’industrial e graphic design.
DESIGN
“Il design che preferisco è quello che ha raggiunto il più alto e delicato equilibrio tra funzionalità e bellezza. Quando non so dire se un oggetto sia più utile, o più bello, allora so di trovarmi davanti a un buon design.”.
Gli argomenti trattati nel blog rispettano questa mia definizione di design. E’ un criterio opinabile, ma è quello che sento più vicino alla mia sensibilità e diventa una bussola per muoversi verso i vasti orizzonti della creatività. Con ciò voglio dire che dei buoni progetti possono ricadere in ambiti che mi interessano, e conosco, poco: un oggetto in grado di risolvere perfettamente la sua funzione è un capolavoro di ingegneria, e un’opera capace di emozionare ha rilevanza artistica, ma in nessuno di questi casi ritengo giusto parlare di buon design.
Per chiarire il concetto ho scelto quattro moral guidance, autentici maestri del disegno industriale e della grafica commerciale che hanno acceso la mia passione per queste discipline e guidato la mia formazione. Questi sono Achille Castiglioni e Dieter Rams per il design, Bob Noorda e Stefan Sagmeister per la grafica; quando ho dubbi nella valutazione di un progetto preferisco appoggiarmi alla loro esperienza. Avrei potuto sceglierne molti altri ma, di sottrazione in sottrazione, sono giunto a definire loro quattro come fondamentali.

ELMANCO è nato nel novembre 2005 e fino al giugno 2008 si è costruito una solida reputazione nazionale e internazionale come blog di cool hunting, grazie alle centinaia di articoli pubblicati, e al feedback di lettori, progettisti e aziende che hanno apprezzato i suoi contenuti freschi, trasversali ed obbiettivi. Dopo una lunga sospensione ho deciso di rilanciare il blog all’inizio del 2011, insieme all’agenzia Mentine e con una veste rinnovata. Nel corso degli anni io e il blog siamo cambiati e gli argomenti trattati si sono ristretti per giungere a una linea editoriale più matura e specifica. POST SCRIPTUM
A tutti quelli che chiedono il significato del nome ELMANCO devo rispondere che una spiegazione su queste pagine sarebbe difficile; posso dire che El Manco è una trattoria sperduta tra i paesi Baschi e le Asturie dove mangiai nell’estate 2001 e dove spero di tornare.
Da El Manco si mangia tanto e bene, si spende poco e ci si diverte.

Welcome, my name is Stefano Ricci, I am the author of ELMANCO, a blog about industrial and graphic design that was born with the purpose to seek beauty, innovation and quality projects.
DESIGN
“My favorite kind of design is the one that reaches the highest and most delicate balance between form and function. When I feel that I am not able to say if an object is more useful or more beautiful I know that I am looking at good design.”
The topics that the blog deals with always follow this definition of design. It is indeed a disputable criterion, but it’s what I feel closest to my sensibility. It’s like a compass that I can use when sailing the boundless horizons of creativity. This means that if I choose not to review a certain project it’s not necessarily because I don’t like it: when a project solves a problem in the best possible way I consider it a masterpiece of engineering, and when something has the power to excite you or make you think I call it art. But this is not what ELMANCO is in search of, this is not what I call good design.
To make this concept clear to myself I chose four among the masters of industrial design and graphic communication to be my moral guides in this editorial journey. They are the ones that made me love these disciplines and guided my education: Achille Castiglioni and Dieter Rams who were industrial designers; Bob Noorda and Stefan Sagmeister, graphic designers. When in doubt in reviewing a project I can rely on their experience. Certainly many others could have been chosen, but these four are the ones who have probably had the most crucial role not only in my studies, but in the history of design.

ELMANCO is a project that took off in 2005 and in the years built itself a solid reputation at international level as a cool hunting blog. This goal was reached thanks to the hundreds of articles we published, thanks to the readers’ feedback and to all the designers and companies who up until June 2008 appreciated our fresh content, our transversal point of view and our commitment to objectivity. After a long stop I came to the decision of re-launching the blog in early 2011 in partnership with Mentine agency. It has a new layout and new contents. During the years both me and the blog have changed a lot and the topics have been narrowed down to meet the requirements of a more mature and specific editorial line. POST SCRIPTUM
To all those who wonder what the meaning of “ELMANCO” is I must answer that a full explanation through these pages would be too difficult; what I can say is that El Manco is a tavern lost between the Basque Country and Asturias where I stopped to eat in the summer of 2001 and where I hope to go back. At El Manco’s the food is delicious, the prices are low and everybody looks happy.
